Maniac Magee is probably my favorite book to read with 5th graders. Jeffrey "Maniac" Magee is an orphan who runs away and ends up in the town of Two Mills, PA. Two Mills is divided into the East and West Ends and people are separated by race. Maniac, so named because of the amazing feats he performs on his first day in town, is blissfully unaware of the tension between black and white until he is forced in the middle of it.
I love all the discussions we get to have with this book. If you haven't read it, I recommend it. There is a good message for everyone, regardless of your age.
