April 1: Underground RR Quilt

We are studying the Civil War in social studies right now. This is one of my favorite units to teach. We actually spend a lot more time talking about the issues that caused the war than we spend learning about battles and generals. One of the topics we deal with is slavery and the Underground Railroad. We learn about how abolitionists found all kinds of secret ways to get slaves out of the South, including using quilts as a secret code. Today I showed my class the quilt I made (out of fabric) showing different quilt blocks that were used as signals, then we made a class quilt (out of paper) for an art project.
